Story

La Dolce Vita.
In the heart
of Chianti

It is said that the best travel guides for a new location are the locals themselves. Who would be a better guide through this beautiful region than Laika, the Tuscan native.

Brolio castle
(Gaiole in Chianti)

The story of Brolio Castle began in 1141, when the Ricasoli family came into possession of it. The Ricasolis were the first to develop and cultivate the vineyards, the earliest exports dating back to the 1600s. It was at Brolio Castle that Baron Bettino Ricasoli, a well-known politician and successful wine entrepreneur, invented what is now the world’s most famous wine, Chianti, in the nineteenth century. With its 1200 hectares immersed in the beautiful Chiantigiana hills, the company is now the biggest producer of Chianti Classico. Visitors can book wine tastings at the Baron Ricasoli Wine Cellar. As well as the famous wine, other excellent local products such as honey and extra virgin olive oil are available for purchase at the cellar.

Antinori nel Chianti classico
(San Casciano in Val di Pesa)

Antinori is one of the most illustrious names in wine-making history, the family having dedicated itself to the production of wine for more than six hundred years, ever since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri (Florentine Winemakers’ Guild) in 1385. Today, Marquess Piero Antinori, with the support of his three daughters, manages this prestigious production firm which, thanks to its owners’ strong traditions and passion, is one of Italy’s leading producers of wine. A new cellar was inaugurated in the heart of Chianti Classico, the Antinori family’s homeland, in 2012. The architectonically valuable structure, surrounded by vines, is symbolic of the family’s wine-making tradition, passed down through twenty-six generations. The cellars are open to the public with guided tours and tastings.

Fonterutoli castle
(Castellina in Chianti)

The hamlet of Fonterutoli lies just a few miles from Castellina in Chianti and has belonged to the Marqueses Mazzei for centuries. The scenery and buildings such as the San Miniato church and the villa built in the late 1500s to replace the castle have remained unchanged. Time seems to stand still in Fonterutoli, its homes, narrow lanes and landscape retaining all the charm of the Middle Ages, telling of the Mazzei family’s age-old wine-making tradition. Twenty-four generations of the family have produced wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, the beating heart of the firm even today. It is possible to book a wine tour or visit the cellar that is always open for tastings.

The medieval Albola Castle is located in the picturesque Chiantagiana hills and has belonged to some of the most important Florentine families including the Acciaiuoli, who expanded and fortified it, the Samminiati, who paved the way for wine production, the Pazzi, one of the most ancient and noble Florentine families, and Prince Giovanni Ginori Conti. Today it belongs to the Zanin family, which has been taking care of the vineyards and producing wine for almost forty years. Visitors can purchase the wines and take part in tastings at the cellars.

Lamole di lamole
(Greve in Chianti)

The Lamole area is a natural amphitheatre that, thanks to its position and perfect exposure, is the ideal place for farming activity, where even the ancient Romans used to grow their vines and olive trees. In the Middle Ages, the area took on increasing importance and became known for the production of iris florentina essence, which was particularly appreciated by Caterina de’ Medici. In the nineteenth century, Lamole was already known as one of the key areas for quality Chianti. Work to recover the old vineyards and restore their original characteristics began in 1993, with the planting of broom, irises and other essences. Visitors can come to the cellars and taste the wines and local produce.
